Drawing Room
To the east of the main entrance is the drawing room. Note the combination gas-electric wall lights. When the house was enlarged in 1900, electric lighting was new and unreliableso they used both energy sources. The light bulb was considered beautiful and often not covered. The ones seen here are authentic 1904 bulbs. A large opalescent glass and brass fixture highlights the hand stenciled ceiling (painted in 1905 and recently restored).
The documentary wallpaper is similar to that showing in old pictures of the room. An ornate fireplace enhances the south wall, one of eleven fireplaces in the mansion.
